I am completely new to oil paints. I have spent the last few days getting familiar with the sense of having paint that you have to actually push around, compared to watercolors which so easily drop off the brush.

Since its such a new technique, I looked for some tutorials that are taught by individuals who are much more skilled in the field. Kevin Hill, more commonly known as Paint With Kevin from his YouTube channel, has a number of paid video lessons for sale on his website.

This painting was done by somewhat following his lesson #1 Beginners, which sells for US$14.95. The lesson is designed to be as simplified as possible. You practice “simple” techniques such as using a palette knife and blending and smoothing your paint. These simple techniques aren’t as easy as you might think, at least for a beginner who has never attempted it otherwise. I really struggled with the palette knife, getting the same sense of broken textures to lay down as Kevin did. Albeit I am working on a much smaller canvas..

As I have learnt, the masters make skills look SO much easier than they often are. Don’t be surprised if you struggle with the techniques as well.

I am definitely going to repeat this lesson, perhaps several times, until I get the skills to a slightly more satisfactory level.
