The strategies you mentioned will work well for IGC. At the end of the day, IGC needs to attract more young delegates to attend the conference and tapping into the Blogosphere is an excellent way to find their target audiences. International Blog Day is an interesting idea. If we can get the IGC blogging community to promote the blog (hit a certain quota), that’s free publicity! Just wondering if some sort of minor incentives can be given to them every time they promote the blog on International Blog Day. That should help us hit the quota alot faster. Great post!

      Thanks for your comment Jerome.
Giving incentives could be a great way to encourage people to blog about the event. Have you any idea what sort of incentives could be offered though? Since the IGC is wanting to keep costs down, a monetary reward might not be completely appropriate.

I have been thinking about what you said about providing incentives for promotion. I know that membership/entry fee to the events can be quite expensive, especially for younger delegates who may still be in university/recently graduated. Since this target group are most likely socialising via the web, perhaps the IGC could offer them discounts/cash back on the entrance fee for every person they refer.

I think that’s a great idea. Maybe IGC could talk to airlines can try to get discounts off the air tickets for the delegates if possible.

Fantastic idea Kathleen! I think the IGC would benefit a fair bit if they actually implemented this into their business model. I like the idea Jerome has about the incentives. I think a company incentive is a great way to get the ball rolling with company blogs. Also with the other geological scientists blogging maybe have a sub section where they could post a link to their blogs.

    Cheers,

Great idea of a network of blogs, there’re so many bloggers/blogs out there now it’s difficult for anyone starting out to gain readership and grow their network. Having a ‘banner’ to operate under and the support from other people with a similar background will definitely help and motivate them to continue. The examples you gave demonstrates that they can be successful, I have used themeforest before and I found it really easy to find good, quality themes in the one place. It just saves time for the user and benefits those who want to get their work ‘out there’.

Using a model like the envato network is an extremely good idea for the IGC. There are possibly countless small geological blogs and websites around the world which could almost be merged into a super network of information on geological subjects.

These blogs are bound to have their own followers that may not be aware that the IGC is happening, and if these blogs are used to help promote the IGC, then this is basically free advertising.

Great blog, you have some great points on how the blogosphere can be used to improve the success of the IGC!
