Thanks for the response David. Separating private and person became an issue for me. KatSkinner.com being my primary domain, I would like to post my own person content here. However as I am trying to create an online alias of "Kat Skinner", its important to appear professional. It's very much a point of interest for new bloggers to consider - especially when considering starting an online business.
A further downside of starting a business in one's own name is it reduces the resell value...

Great post, I agree 100% on the fact that we have become extremely impatient as a result of having all this information at our fingertips all the time. I mean it wasn't long ago that we were happy to wait as our dial up modem connected to the internet, but now if our internet drops out for 5 minutes we become extremly frustrated.

Providing almost instantaneous feedback is extremely beneficial but companies need to be weary of a number of traps they may fall into. Whoever is on the end of the companies twitter account needs to ensure that any information they are giving out reflects the thoughts and feelings of the company they are representing - so user training is extremely important here. If one support person goes rogue and offers the wrong information on an upcoming event or product launch it could be disastrous for the company!

As the IGC is going to have the best and most well respected professionals in the field of geological science it would almost be a waste not to have some form of wiki! Visitors may not be able to get to every single keynote speech that they wanted to due to time restrictions, but if this information was published on a wiki (even if it had to be made private for only those with IGC passes) it would improve the experience of all involved.

I think the fact of user authentication should also be taken into consideration when implementing a wiki - if the most well respected professor posted findings from his research it may have very little persuasive weight if he accidentally posted anonymously!

Great post!

Using a model like the envato network is an extremely good idea for the IGC. There are possibly countless small geological blogs and websites around the world which could almost be merged into a super network of information on geological subjects.

These blogs are bound to have their own followers that may not be aware that the IGC is happening, and if these blogs are used to help promote the IGC, then this is basically free advertising.

Great blog, you have some great points on how the blogosphere can be used to improve the success of the IGC!

Your points on engagement are particularly thought provoking here... On the one hand you do want to ensure that your employees are happy and are using the new features, but at the same time you need to ensure that there are some restrictions on what they can do (or how much they do it!)

As Kathleen Mok said you need to help ensure that older employees don't feel left behind or that any new implementations are having a negative effect on their productivity. I think that having younger employees using and promoting new systems will help encourage older employees to invest their time and energy in new improvements.

Thanks Kathleen for the excellent comment!
Many companies are struggling with encouraging the older employees to adopt new 2.0 technologies such as social media - which unfortunately since majority of the older employees are in management and higher positions of power this slows the "new age adaption" considerably as a whole for the entire company. I have seen the situation a number of times where management would consider the younger more tech employees to be "wasting time" by using social media even for work purposes, all because they failed to actually understand the concept and technology.
Thanks again for the feedback.

In large events such as the IGC, like Jerome said before using Foursquare is one way, and also live tweeting with a dedicated hashtag could be used. It seems to be a popular way nowadays for more people (even those who are not at the event) to connect with those who are there.

Yes it's rather daunting to go to a wiki and find it to be empty. It's often easier to go in and add / edit others' work rather than starting something from scratch. Encouraging others to add content is a good idea although to add to your point I guess having someone (a 'champion' as others have written on this topic) would also be beneficial.

Great idea of a network of blogs, there're so many bloggers/blogs out there now it's difficult for anyone starting out to gain readership and grow their network. Having a 'banner' to operate under and the support from other people with a similar background will definitely help and motivate them to continue. The examples you gave demonstrates that they can be successful, I have used themeforest before and I found it really easy to find good, quality themes in the one place. It just saves time for the user and benefits those who want to get their work 'out there'.
