I just celebrated my birthday. Yay! My husband knew I had been eyeing off a set of Faber-Castell Polychromos for some time now, and decided that since I hadn’t taken the monetary plunge that he would on my behalf.
One of the many reasons I had been looking at these pencils was the desire to potentially change my art medium. I love watercolor. I love the effects that you can achieve, and the glowing transparency of the paintings. But it seems that I am fighting the drying time more than I am enjoying my painting. You see, I live in a very hot and dry climate. In fact in Kuwait we can reach up to 50 degrees celsius (that’s 122f) with 0% humidity! As you can guess, whilst the water constantly rolls of you, the water on the paper is in constant and very fast state of evaporation. That’s not very productive for a watercolorist. Some days I can’t even make a basic wash without significant backruns…
Thus the search for alternative art medium was inspired. This led me to a non-drying medium – pencils. You can blend to your hearts desire, dropping and returning a few days or even weeks later! So much less stressful.
Over the next few weeks I hope to be uploading some of my initial experiences with these pencils, as well as a few of my first few practice projects.
